Things to do in Greece

While we can offer a list of main attractions in any area of Greece, here are our top picks for Greece’s most popular sites. Work with us and we can customize an itinerary just for you.

ATHENS  Acropolis & Parthenon
The word acropolis means “highest point.” Most Greek cities had their acropolis, where people sheltered during war times and where they built their sanctuaries. Today, the term refers specifically to the Acropolis in Athens, a 512-foot-high limestone rock. Here, Athenians built magnificent temples, most of them dedicated to the goddess Athena, patroness of the city. The Parthenon, an icon of Western civilization, is one of the most famous buildings in the world. The temple was built in the fifth century BC and overlooks the city of Athens from its majestic position on top of the sacred Acropolis Hill.

MYKONOS  Delos
Delos, a small island near Mykonos in the southern Aegean Sea, is well-known for its history, mythology and archaeological sites. The ongoing excavations of the island are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean. Its many landmarks include the Doric Temple of Isis, the Temple of Hera, the House of Dionysus and the Delos Synagogue — the oldest synagogue known today. The most popular site may be the Terrace of the Lions. Here, seven replicas of the marble lions dedicated to Apollo around 600 BC guard the Sacred Way. You can view the original statues in the nearby museum.

SANTORINI Island Life
Ranked world's top island by both Travel+Leisure and the BBC in 2011, Santorini is easily recognizable by the houses dug sideways or downwards into the rocky terrain, whitewashed or limewashed with various volcanic ashes to add color. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago that bears the same name and is the remnant of a volcanic caldera. Santorini’s unique climate and volcanic ash soil are ideal for growing prized produce, including renowned Santorini tomatoes. The island also supports a small but flourishing wine industry. Top attractions include the pre-historic city of Akrotiri; the villages of Emporio, Oia and Fira; local cuisine; beaches, including the hot springs; and the caldera.

CRETE  Knossos
The palace of Knossos in Crete was the political center of Minoan culture. Larger and more extravagant than any other palace in the region, the palace was alternately occupied and abandoned throughout the Neolithic era, the Bronze Age and the Classical period. The palace encompassed six acres with 1,300 rooms and incorporated advanced architectural techniques in its construction, including a five-story high portion of the structure. While several centuries worth of architectural elements can be seen at the site, parts of the palace have been restored, creating a mix of historical preservation and modern-day fantasy.

VERGINA  Tombs of Kings
Vergina, a small town in northern Greece, was the first capital of the ancient kingdom of Macedonia, called Aigai. The town became internationally famous in 1977, when Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos unearthed the burial site of the kings of Macedon, including the tomb of Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great. Today, a museum houses four tombs and a small temple shrine built over the tomb of Philip II. One of the tombs is thought to have belonged to Alexander IV, son of Alexander the Great. The museum also houses many artifacts buried along with these ancient kings.
